The Cangrejeros de Santurce and the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) took drastic measures after the arrest of point guard Walter Hodge for an alleged domestic violence incident against his partner. The BSN activated its Protocol for the Management of Cases and Complaints on Domestic and Gender Violence, designating an investigative committee and ordering the provisional separation of the player from all official activities related to the BSN. The Cangrejeros de Santurce also announced the temporary separation of the veteran shooter from the team's events. The BSN reiterates its absolute rejection of any manifestation of domestic and gender violence, and reaffirms its commitment to due process and the presumption of innocence that protects every person until otherwise determined. The current or eventual disciplinary determination will correspond to the league president, Ricardo Dalmau, who will evaluate the circumstances of the case, the severity of the alleged conduct, and the final report presented by the investigative committee. Hodge was transferred to the Caguas Tribunal for the possible filing of charges after being detained since Wednesday at the Command of that municipality. According to the complaint, the events occurred on Tuesday at 10:30 p.m., when the player allegedly uttered obscene words against the woman and threatened to disclose intimate photographs. This is not the first time Hodge has faced allegations of this nature, as in May 2018 he was arrested upon arrival at Luis Muñoz Marín Airport in Carolina, due to an outstanding arrest warrant for alleged acts of gender violence. Subsequently, in September of that year, charges were filed in absentia for violation of Article 3.2 of Law 54 for the Prevention and Intervention of Domestic Violence and for aggravated maltreatment, since the events occurred in the presence of a minor. However, the judicial process did not continue after the then-complainant failed to appear at consecutive hearings held at the Aguadilla Tribunal. The Cangrejeros de Santurce and the BSN will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary measures to ensure the integrity of the game and the safety of all involved. Hodge's suspension is a clear example of the seriousness with which these cases are taken and the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment in basketball. The BSN and the Cangrejeros de Santurce work together to ensure that basketball is a sport that promotes equality, respect, and justice for all. The basketball community must come together to condemn any form of violence and support the victims of these crimes. Hodge's suspension is an important step in this direction, and we hope it serves as an example to others of the importance of taking these cases seriously and working together to prevent gender violence in sports. The Cangrejeros de Santurce and the BSN are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all players, coaches, and fans. The suspension of Hodge is a clear message that any form of violence will not be tolerated in the BSN or in the Cangrejeros de Santurce organization.
