May 26, 2026 - 5:33 PM The shake-up in Santurce has paid off so far. After the departures of coach Nelson Colón and import Malik Beasley, the Cangrejeros are 4-1, turning their slow start in the 2026 BSN tournament around. Under the leadership of new coach David Rosario, the crustaceans have a 3-0 record, with wins over the Capitanes de Arecibo, Santeros de Aguada, and Osos de Manatí. Assistant coach Luis "Mandy" Cancel also picked up a win in Canóvanas before Rosario's arrival, a three-time league champion. With a 10-12 record, Santurce is halfway to fourth place in the A Conference, held by the Mets de Guaynabo (10-11). The expanded rotations implemented by Rosario and the resurgence of center Davon Jefferson have been key to the recent success of the capital team. "The ball movement to Jefferson... with Nelson averaged less than 10 points. We've seen another concept, another chemistry", said Tony Ruiz, BSN director and commentator, to El Nuevo Día. In the last five games, Jefferson, 39, has averaged 18.8 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. Under Colón's tutelage, the veteran reinforcement averaged 6.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 11 games. Another success was the substitution of Beasley for guard Ian Clark, who had already reinforced the team in 2025. In four games, Clark averaged 14.2 points off the bench. "It gives them productivity, something they didn't have. It gives you another bonafide shooter that's essential. They're enjoying it. They're in a good moment. They're believing in themselves. I think the attitude has changed completely and they're reflecting it on the court", Ruiz said. Rosario is also using guards Ángel Rodríguez and Jordan Howard in the starting lineup. In these five games, Santurce has also recovered its defensive identity, allowing just 84.8 points per game. In the last seven games under Colón's leadership, they played 1-6 and allowed 96.1 points per game. Santurce's positive streak has arrived without the services of two-time MVP Walter Hodge Jr. and center Devon Collier, both out with injuries and without a defined return date. Santurce is currently in the middle of a five-game road trip. They will play in San Germán on Saturday and visit Quebradillas on Wednesday, June 3, before closing the trip on Saturday, June 6, in Manatí.
